New Survey Reveals Alarming Trends in Preventive Healthcare

A recent survey conducted by Aflac, a leading provider of supplemental health insurance in the U.S., has shed light on concerning trends in preventive healthcare. The second annual Wellness Matters survey revealed that a significant number of Americans are neglecting their health by delaying important screenings and checkups.

According to the survey, 77% of Americans admit to putting off an important health checkup, with millennials and Gen Z being particularly prone to this behavior. In fact, 84% of millennials and 82% of Gen Z reported delaying health and wellness screenings. This is especially alarming considering that early detection of serious illnesses can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

The survey also highlighted the impact of language barriers on healthcare access for Hispanic Americans. Approximately 42% of Hispanic respondents indicated that language is a barrier to understanding both their medical needs and insurance policies. This underscores the need for improved language support and cultural sensitivity in the healthcare system.

One of the most concerning findings of the survey was that individuals who have received a cancer diagnosis were more likely to have avoided common health screenings. This emphasizes the importance of regular screenings for early detection and underscores the need for increased awareness and education on the importance of preventive care.

Logistical barriers were also identified as a significant factor contributing to the delay in seeking healthcare. Conflicts with work hours, challenges in taking time off work, and difficulty arranging transportation or childcare were cited by 58% of millennials as reasons for not getting health screenings on time.

The survey also revealed the influence of community and personal relationships on healthcare decisions. Nearly 7 in 10 respondents stated that they would be more likely to go to the doctor if encouraged by a friend or loved one. This highlights the power of support and advocacy in promoting proactive healthcare habits.

Aflac Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary, Thomas Morey, shared his personal experience with a health crisis in his mid-20s, emphasizing the importance of taking charge of one’s health regardless of age. Morey stated, ‘Going to the doctor for wellness checkups and recommended screenings is something everyone should strive to do.’

Aflac is committed to raising awareness about the significance of preventive care and empowering individuals to prioritize their health. The company encourages individuals to schedule regular wellness appointments and advocates for improved access to healthcare services.
