Dave Ramsey Says Your Money Habits Matter More Than the Math
Quick Read
-
Dave Ramsey told a caller his debt problem stems from insufficient income, not a high interest rate, making rate-shopping a waste of time.
-
Raising a monthly payment from $200 to $500 on an $8,000 balance clears debt in 19 months versus 70, saving over $4,500 in interest.
-
Charging $150 in bills back onto a card while paying $200 monthly causes the balance to grow, making even a 0% transfer useless.

Jared is 28. He carries credit card debt on a modest monthly income, and he was still swiping his cards to cover bills when he called The Ramsey Show. Dave Ramsey, the radio host behind the Baby Steps debt plan, co-hosted the episode with Rachel Cruze. He gave his diagnosis in two sentences: “So you don’t have an interest rate problem. You’ve got an income problem.”
A lot of money rides on that call. The average credit card APR is 21%, which is record territory. At that rate, a balance you keep adding to can grow even while you make a payment every month. Shopping for a lower rate feels productive. For someone in Jared’s position, it mostly burns time.
Ramsey Is Right, and the Arithmetic Backs Him
The hosts said on the same episode that personal finance is 80% behavior. On earlier shows, Ramsey’s team added that it is “only 20% head knowledge.” The math still matters here. It just points at the payment.
Here’s an example. Take an illustrative $8,000 balance at the average APR. Interest alone runs about $141 a month.
If you pay $200 a month and charge nothing new, payoff takes about 70 months. You’d pay roughly $6,000 in interest along the way.

The fix most people reach for first is a lower rate. Say a consolidation loan cuts the rate to an example 12%. The same $200 payment now pays off the debt in about 51 months. That helps, but you’re still in debt for more than four years.
