XRP Ledger Surpasses 13 Million AI Agent Transactions as Autonomous Payments
The XRP Ledger has crossed a significant threshold in autonomous commerce, processing more than 13 million transactions initiated by AI agents, a development that now accounts for roughly a quarter of all activity on the network.
J. Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX, confirmed the milestone on X, reporting 13,489,468 agentic transactions settled across 168 registered x402 merchants. The cumulative volume includes 6,982.32 XRP and 12,009.98 RLUSD, according to data shared by former Ripple product lead Chandler Fang.
Agentic payments now represent approximately 25% of total ledger activity, a figure Akinyele presented at XRP Seoul 2026 on October 3. The engineering lead had projected earlier this year that the network would quickly surpass 10 million agentic transactions — a benchmark that has now been exceeded by a wide margin. His latest assessment suggests the next order of magnitude may arrive faster than current expectations. “100M might actually come sooner than we expect,” he wrote.
Fang, who now serves as cofounder of t54ai, noted that transaction volumes have climbed from approximately one million in July, reflecting accelerating adoption of automated payment rails. He identified broader merchant integration as the next phase of growth for the ecosystem.
The infrastructure underpinning this expansion is designed around predictability. AI agents pay for APIs, computing resources, and data without human approval for each transaction, which demands fast confirmation times and stable costs. XRPL delivers settlements in three to five seconds with fees fixed in advance, eliminating the uncertainty of gas auctions or fluctuating transaction costs that characterize other networks.
Developer Tooling Expands Access
Ripple has introduced the XRPL AI Starter Kit to lower the barrier for developers building agentic solutions. The toolkit includes an XRPL Docs MCP Server, which connects MCP-compatible clients such as Claude and Cursor directly to XRPL documentation through a standardized protocol.
The kit also features the XRPL Agent Wallet Skill and XRPL Payment Skill designed for Claude, covering wallet creation, balance checks, payments, and transaction monitoring. A guided tutorial enables developers to complete a confirmed testnet payment in under 30 minutes.
x402 Protocol Builds Commercial Infrastructure
The integration of the x402 payment protocol into XRPL allows AI agents to pay for API calls and AI model inference using either XRP or RLUSD, Ripple’s USD-backed stablecoin. The 168 active x402 merchants represent a live commercial infrastructure supporting agentic payments, with applications spanning programming interfaces, digital information, and computing resources.
RLUSD provides price stability for workflows that require predictable transaction values. The stablecoin supports use cases including invoice settlements, payroll, and agent-to-agent commerce, leveraging the same transaction primitives that move XRP. Both assets can be exchanged through XRPL’s built-in decentralized exchange without external bridges.
| Asset | Type | Primary Use | Exchange Option |
|---|---|---|---|
| XRP | Native coin | Settlement, transaction fees | Native DEX |
| RLUSD | Stablecoin (USD-backed) | Price stability for payments | Native DEX |
Safeguards and Institutional Infrastructure
As autonomous transactions scale, RippleX is developing security measures to govern how agents interact with digital assets. At XRP Seoul 2026, Akinyele outlined plans for verifiable identities, transaction permissions, and spending limits for agents handling funds. Proposed secure smart wallets would hold XRP and stablecoins while enforcing these rules on automated transactions.
The ledger has operated continuously since 2012 without transaction rollbacks, positioning it as a foundation for institutions deploying capital-efficient agents. Every agentic transaction generates network activity, and as volume scales, demand for XRP as a settlement asset scales alongside it.
Fang’s outlook centers on expanding practical payment destinations beyond raw transaction volume. Additional businesses and digital services are expected to accept payments initiated by AI agents through the x402 facilitator, reducing manual checkout processes. The next growth phase, he argued, depends on more merchants connecting services to the network’s automated settlement tools.
Akinyele encouraged developers to engage with the expanding merchant base and transaction volumes, stating, “Now is the time to build.” Newcomers to the space have an opportunity to participate in a growing community of agents and merchants driving usage on the XRPL.
