Microchip Technology Releases Flashtec NVMe 5016 SSD Controller to Meet Growing Data Center Demands
Microchip Technology, a leading provider of smart, connected, and secure embedded control and processing solutions, has unveiled its latest innovation to address the increasing demand for powerful, efficient, and reliable data centers. The company has introduced the Flashtec NVMe 5016 Solid State Drive (SSD) controller, designed to offer higher levels of bandwidth, security, and flexibility.
As the Artificial Intelligence (AI) boom and the rapid expansion of cloud-based services continue, data centers need to keep up with the advancements in AI and Machine Learning (ML). Microchip’s fifth-generation Flashtec NVMe controller aims to fulfill the need for high-performance, power-optimized SSDs in the market.
The Flashtec NVMe 5016 controller is specifically designed to support enterprise applications that require low latency and high performance, such as online transaction processing, financial data processing, and database mining. It also caters to the growing AI needs by providing higher throughput for reading and writing large data sets used in model training and inference processing.
With sequential read performance of over 14 GB per second, the NVMe 5016 controller maximizes the utilization of compute resources in both traditional and AI-accelerated servers under demanding workloads. It supports the latest standard NVMe host interface and offers a high random read performance of 3.5M IOs per second. The controller’s power profile is focused on power-sensitive data center needs, delivering over 2.5 GB of data per watt.
Microchip’s Flashtec NVMe 5016 controller utilizes advanced node technologies and includes power management features like automatic idling of processor cores and autonomous power reduction capabilities. It also provides strong Error Correction Code (ECC) to support the latest Flash memory technologies, including Quad-Level Cell (QLC), Triple-Level Cell (TLC), and Multi-Level Cell (MLC) NAND.
The flexibility and scalability of the NVMe 5016 controller help reduce the total cost of ownership, as it supports advanced virtualization capabilities like single root I/O virtualization (SR-IOV) and multiple physical functions. The controller’s programmable platform allows developers to maximize the performance, efficiency, and reliability of Flash resources on the SSD, especially for those planning to utilize Flexible Data Placement (FDP) in their SSDs.
Microchip’s Flashtec NVMe 5016 controller also prioritizes security and data protection. It integrates security features to maintain the integrity of both firmware and data throughout their lifecycle. The controller adheres to stringent security protocols, including the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-3 Level 2 and the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) Opal standards.
Microchip’s latest innovation has received positive feedback from industry leaders. Greg Matson, Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning and Marketing for Solidigm, commended the Flashtec PCIe controller’s quality and reliability, stating that it interops well with Solidigm’s QLC NAND, meeting the increasing demand for data-intensive workloads such as AI and ML.
Huabo Cai, Chairman and CEO of Longsys, emphasized the strong relationship between Longsys and Microchip in driving the rapidly expanding enterprise SSD market. He praised Microchip’s reliable and flexible architecture of the PCIe Flashtec products, which offer an excellent foundation for Longsys’ enterprise solutions with multiple advanced NAND Flash.
Microchip’s Flashtec NVMe 5016 controller is a significant contribution to the data center industry, providing higher performance, power optimization, and security. With its advanced features and compatibility with various Flash memory technologies, it is poised to meet the evolving needs of AI, cloud computing, and business-critical applications.
